Job of the Month: Rio Mare Presentation Box
For this month’s featured project, we’re showcasing a presentation box we created for Rio Mare, the premium Italian tuna brand. This project combined clever structural design, striking print, and a sustainable approach to packaging—resulting in a piece that was as practical as it was eye-catching.
The Brief
Rio Mare approached us to produce a high-quality presentation box. Sustainability was a key consideration—the box needed to be 100% recyclable while still delivering a polished, premium finish in line with their branding.
This meant avoiding magnets or plastic lamination, and instead, relying on smart design choices and eco-friendly materials to achieve the same level of impact.
The Specification
The finished box was a 4-part tuck flap case and base with impressive dimensions of 510 x 390 x 70mm. The structure was built to be strong, protective, and user-friendly, while incorporating several bespoke elements:
Base: Made from 2mm white lined board, wrapped in 150gsm uncoated paper and printed in full colour.
Case: Constructed from 2mm greyboard with a full-height front panel, wrapped and lined with 150gsm uncoated stock, printed full colour. Instead of magnets, a 540gsm Colorplan Candy Pink tuck flap provided secure closure while keeping the design recyclable.
Base Fitment: Score-cut board with a topper and aperture, glued in place for stability. The topper was printed full colour on 350gsm uncoated stock, with a matching Candy Pink Colorplan aperture for consistency.
Translucent Reveal Sheets: Two per box, printed on 120gsm Radiant White Transclear, adding a layer of luxury to the unboxing experience.
Finishing Touches: Bespoke round stickers and a tailored outer mailer ensured the boxes were delivered in pristine condition.
An A5 insert card, printed double-sided on 350gsm uncoated stock, accompanied the box to provide additional messaging.
The Challenges
The biggest challenge was balancing sustainability with luxury. Rio Mare wanted their box to be fully recyclable, which meant we had to rethink traditional presentation box elements like magnetic closures or laminated finishes.
To achieve this, we used:
A tuck flap closure in place of magnets.
Uncoated stock throughout, ensuring the box remained plastic-free and fully recyclable.
Pantone gold ink, which provided the elegance and premium feel of metallic foiling but in a recyclable format.
These choices meant the box remained true to Rio Mare’s sustainability values while still looking and feeling high-end.
The Result
The final presentation box perfectly reflected Rio Mare’s premium brand image while aligning with their sustainability goals. With soft pink tones, tactile uncoated stock, and the shimmering Pantone gold accents, the box delivered a memorable unboxing experience without compromising on recyclability.
Another successful bespoke packaging project—where thoughtful design and material choices came together to create something both practical and impressive.
